An important factor in the development of the breed is the admission to the herdbook register and the linear assessment of animals. After testing in 1990, these type numbers were systematically applied in the evaluation of bulls. Individual core numbers are also becoming increasingly important for cows. Since 1999, linear assessment has been developed for each animal registered in the herd book.
Utility and purpose of linear assessment:
→ A periodic inventory of the physical form/characteristics of the registered cattle herd, whether it is a particular herd or the breed as a whole;
→ A selection of maternal cattle to allow an inclusion of bull calves in KI centers or stud bull in one;
→ The possibility of detection of heifers that may shed embryos in the future;
→ A refined genetic evaluation of KI bulls or bull fathers;
→ There may be added value for the evaluated animals in case of calamities, such as accident or cattle disease outbreaks: enrolled animals are reimbursed for a higher amount.
A special system of linear assessment has been developed for the Belgian Blue breed. Each animal is given a numerical assessment on 22 points.
In addition, any defects in legwork are registered. This registration makes it possible to compare animals without having seen them.
Registration in the studbook gives the opportunity to:
→ Record parentage of animals individually;
→ Make a linear assessment for each animal individually;
→ Participate in bull advisory programs, this is important to reduce inbreeding;
→ To make rapid progress thanks to participation in inspections where breeders can compare their breeding strategies, potentially leading to the sale of breeding stock at home and/or abroad;
→ Possibly adding value to your animals in the event of emergencies, such as an accident or cattle disease outbreak.
Registered animals are often reimbursed for a higher amount.
