The Belgian Blue breed gets divided into two types, the meat type and the dual-purpose type. The dual-purpose type is kept for milk and much less for meat. The meat type is kept for meat. The meat type animals have higher muscle development and there is uniformity among the animals.
Despite its name, the Belgian Blue breed includes three color varieties: all-white, white-blue to blue and white-black. There are also rare colors such as red-white and white-backed. The animals have a very calm and gentle nature.
The cows are excellent mothers and they take good care of their calves. Milk production in the meat type is lower but sufficient for the calf. The carcass weighs less and therefore the profit is also lower. Because of this, farmers strive for generous carcasses. This had the positive effect of evolving the breed into an animal with a stronger cardiopulmonary system and stronger legs. Health and durability continue to be improved. The economic benefit of this is that the cattle achieve a higher slaughter weight.
The Belgian Blue breed is favored for this reason.
